This is a simple tutorial on how to hide files and folder using three different methods
For this tutorial we are hiding three files
dh.png – An image
jupiter.mp4 – A video
NetBeansProjects.rar – An archived file < Which can contain folders and files>
python 3.6.0.exe – A windows executable <exe> file
This method shows how to hide any type of binary file in a media file e.g. you can have bunch of exe, videos, music, zip file in a video file and have the video file to play normally while it still contain those files. the command is as follow
copy /b mediafile.mp4 + binaryfile<e.g. exe, zip, e.t.c.> + anotherbinaryfile + asmuchbinaryfiles<just add + before the file> + theoutputfile.mp4
A detailed example is illustrated and explained below :
Open your windows command prompt “WIN + R” then type “CMD” in the RUN box
Navigate to the directory that contains the files you want to hide in your command prompt
Then run the following command in your command prompt
copy /b jupiter.mp4 + NetbeansProjects.rar + python-3.6.0.exe + dh.png hiddenfile.mp4
The output hiddenfile.mp4 size will eauals the size of all the containing files.
If you open the file it will play only the media files. To view the content use any archive manager i recommends 7ZIP to me it the best and it free to download at sourceforge.
While you have navigated to the folder that contains the hidden files on 7zip select
“OPEN INSIDE #”
else any other open command wont open the media file as archive.
Select all the file you wish to extract and click the EXTRACT button on 7zip toolbar, select the folder you wish to place the extracted items and click OK . Your hidden files will be extracted to that folder then you can view the files, run and open them
This method is not reliable and might only work for only WINDOWS EXECUTABLE FILES <.EXE>
- Change the extension of the file you wish to hide from .exe to any extension e.g. .png, .mp3, .zip, <.anything>
- To view the file as .exe create a shortcut of the file and change it targets to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CMD.EXE /C <THEFILEYOUCHANGETHEEXTENSION>
- To make sure the file is not suspected you can change the icon of the shortcut to a deceiving icon.
this method is for programmers which shows how to embed a file in an executable file and extract it to designated folder on request. This method is discussed in the video below.
By default Linux and Windows allows you to hide files. On linux just add dot<.> before the filename or foldername and the file is hidden. On Windows select the files and folder you want to add then click the VIEW button in the windows explorer toolbar then select HIDE SELECTED ITEMS.
the method four is not reliable as the hidden files can still be view if the SHOW HIDDEN FILES is clicked in the VIEW tab.
